Błędowska Desert
The Błędowska Desert is the largest area of drifting inland sands in Central Europe, covering an area of about 33 km². Located just a few minutes' drive from Hotel Victoria in Olkusz, it is a unique attraction on a continental scale, combining a harsh desert landscape with a rich military history and modern tourist infrastructure.
How was the "Polish Sahara" formed?
Contrary to common associations, the Błędowska Desert is not a work of nature, but the result of intensive human activity. In the 13th century, due to the development of silver and lead mines near Olkusz, large areas of forest were cut down, exposing thick layers of Quaternary sands up to 70 m deep. In the past, the desert was famous for the phenomenon of mirages, and during World War II, it was used by German troops to train Afrika Korps units. Today it is a tourist attraction of great natural and historical significance. The area is currently protected under the Natura 2000 program, and regular shrub clearance operations help preserve the unique character of the drifting dunes.
What is worth seeing? Three view points
When setting out from Hotel Victoria on a trip, it is worth visiting three key points, each offering a different perspective:
- Róża Wiatrów (Klucze): The most modern logistics center with wooden piers and a gastronomy zone. Ideal for families with strollers and those seeking comfort.
- Wzgórze Czubatka (382 m above sea level): Offers a spectacular panorama of the southern part of the desert. From here, the yellow trail leads directly onto the sands, offering a kilometer-long walk in a Saharan atmosphere.
- Wzgórze Dąbrówka (Chechło): A point with a view of the military area. With some luck, one can observe spectacular parachute drops and equipment airdrops by the 6th Airborne Brigade from Krakow.
Velo Pustynia: A novelty for the active
From 2025, the Błędowska Desert is a paradise for cyclists. The Velo Pustynia trail system is a 16.5-kilometer loop connecting all the viewpoints.
- Concrete artery (8 km): A wide path ideal for rollerbladers, children on scooters, and families with strollers.
- Boardwalk on stilts: An absolute hit – a 400-meter wooden path section rising up to 4 m above the Biała Przemsza Valley.
- Forest and gravel sections: Excellent for MTB and gravel bikes.
Exploring with a dog: Safety and rules
The Błędowska Desert is one of the most dog-friendly natural attractions in the region, open for walks with dogs all year round. However, due to the specific nature of the terrain, owners should remember a few key rules:
- Regulations and leash: Although information boards are not always found at every entrance to the desert, general nature protection rules require dogs to be kept on a leash, and for breeds considered aggressive or large – also muzzled.
- Thermal hazard: The sand in the desert heats up very quickly. On hot days, the ground temperature can cause serious burns to the pads of a dog's paws. The best time for walks with your pet in summer is early morning or late evening.
- Logistics: There are no natural sources of drinking water in the desert itself. It is mandatory to bring a supply of water for your pet and waste bags – carry them with you as access to bins deeper in the area is limited.
